New House in South Knowlesville!

We have some pretty exciting things starting to happen in this little rural community. One that I'm particularly excited about is the construction of my brand-spanking-new strawbale cottage on land that is soon to become a Community Land Trust.

What's all this mean?

Strawbale construction: A fantastic, inexpensive, sustainable building technique for new homeowners who don't want to spend a fortune on heating and insulation. In my house, the square straw bales serve as structure (ie: they hold up the weight of the roof) and insulation (straw has an R-value of about 48, compared with the average home's R-value of 16-20). Other features of the house include: rubble trench foundation (very little concrete used; the rubble below it allows for water to drain away, preventing cracking); off-grid solar energy system mounted on the roof; a south-facing greenhouse attached to the house for food production and some heat collection....

Community Land Trust: A land ownership structure by which a piece of land (in our case, 100 acres) is owned collectively by the members of the Trust; no individual homeowner actually owns the land. You can own the buildings on it, but all the land is collectively managed by the members. Benefits? You're not tied down to a huge hunk of land all by yourself. You can do more because you've got a community of neighbours close by to help out and share ideas. You aren't stuck with a mortgage. You're investing in relationships instead of making a purchase.

The construction of this house has been an amazing experience, mostly because it's given me the opportunity to see people (neighbours, friends, visiting strangers) at their most generous, whether they're pitching in to help stack firewood for a few hours or diving into the project to see it through to the end. What an incredible way to bring people together!

Here are some pictures of the almost-finished product. Special thanks to my neighbour, Leland, who is the mastermind and artist behind the design and construction of this wonderful home!
I recommend this style of construction to anybody with a sense of adventure and an interest in safe, natural homes. Get in touch if you want to know more about this construction technique.

Wind Workshop at Falls Brook - July 17-19

Interested in how wind turbines actually work? Curious about how it can work for you?

Come help build a real wind turbine and get to know the inner workings of how it generates clean, renewable electricity. Falls Brook Centre is partnering with Silver Foot Wind (
http://silverfootwind.com/ ) to provide a hands-on, demonstration workshop. We will be constructing an unfinished wind turbine from a previous Silver Foot workshop, and will see it through to completion.

This workshop will also cover the basics of wind energy and how it can work for your home or business. Come ask the experts on how wind energy can generate electricity for you, and see Falls Brook Centre's many wind energy demonstrations. The completed wind turbine will also be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

For more information about the workshop or for purchasing the turbine, please contact Greg LeBlanc: email greg@fallsbrookcentre.ca or call (506) 375-4310 Workshop spaces are limited, so book your spot today. Stay tuned for more details as the workshop date approaches.

NB Talent hits the country stage

Jane Erdhart with her disco-follksy-rocker sound tore up the KAN Centre last long weekend. Hailing from Moncton, this local NB girl was wrapping up her cross maritime "family photo" tour with fellow folksters Bette et Wallet from Quebec City. With a "foot tapping" workshop, contra dancing, square dancing, and hard electric show, the old country church was-a-bustling with good vibrations. "I fell in love with this place last summer, and I just love coming back here" says Jane, of the Knowellsville scene. Now to get other artists to do the same, so that local talent really can find a receptive welcome back here where they belong!

NB Dream Tank

Kind of like a Think Tank... but with vision...
This is the New Brunswick Dream Tank.

We've all heard the new government mantra to "Be... in this place", but what does that mean? Contemplating our navel and watching the fiddle heads grow?
What about jobs, entertainment, community, identity?
How can we shape our place on this land to create vibrant, dynamic, rural communities that meet our needs and dreams? How can we create opportunities for youth to stay and make a life in New Brunswick without having to flee for the western plains?

The Dream Tank is a process - constantly evolving. If you have ideas, aspirations, or itchy feet to create change then lets put the limbic regions of our collective brains together and create a place where we really do want to be.
